Republic of Finland

  • Finland is the fifth largest country and the most sparsely populated country in Europe.

  • Finland is three times the size of Ohio and shares its borders with Sweden, Norway and Russia.

  • Around two-thirds of Finland is covered in heavy forest and about a one-tenth by water.

  • In the far north, the sun does not set for around 10 weeks during the 'White Nights' of summer, while in winter it does not rise above the horizon for nearly eight weeks.

  • Industries: metals and metal products, electronics, machinery and scientific instruments, shipbuilding, pulp and paper, food-stuffs, chemicals, textiles, clothing.

  • Natural resources: timber, iron ore, copper, lead, zinc, chromite, nickel, gold, silver, limestone.

  • The capital and largest city is Helsinki. It became Finland’s capital in 1812.
