Arbor Day is April 26th!

Did you know that Arbor Day’s Founder was a University of Michigan Graduate?

Julius Sterling Morton was President Grover Cleveland’s Secretary of Agriculture. He was born in Jefferson County, New York on April 22, 1832. He was raised in Detroit and attended the University of Michigan and graduated in 1854. After graduating, he and his wife moved to Nebraska.

At this time, Nebraska was not yet or-ganized as a territory. He staked his claim in Nebraska City. Morton was ap-pointed as Secretary of the Nebraska Territory by President James Buchanan and served until 1861.

J. Sterling Morton was a respected agriculturalist. He spent his time instructing people in the modern techniques of farming and forestry. He set a good example by planting orchards, shade trees and wind breaks on this own farm. Morton became well known in Nebraska for his political, journalistic and agricultural activities.
