Exploring Under Water

Mudpuppies, also called waterdogs, are one of only a few salamanders that make noise. They get their name from the somewhat embellished notion that their squeaky vocalizations sound like a dog's bark.

Did you know?

  • Fisherman who hook mudpuppies will often cut their line rather than touch these extremely slimy amphibians?

  • The mudpuppy is one of the few salamander species to make noise. It squeaks!

  • The warmer and murkier the water it lives in, the longer the mudpuppy’s gills.

Learn more about these interesting amphibians in today’s Exploring Under Water!
