All About Michigan

Hi Kids! Happy Friday! Did you know we live in a very special state? It's true! Michigan is unlike any other state in the country. Here are some fun facts about our great state...

  1. The name Michigan is derived from the Ojibwa Indian words Mishi-gama (meaning "large lake").

  2. Michigan has more fresh water coastline than any other state or province in the world.

  3. Michigan is the only state in the United Sates that touches four of the five Great Lakes (Huron, Michigan, Erie and Superior).

  4. No point in Michigan is farther than six miles from a body of water (lake or river).

  5. Michigan is the only state in the United States to have two peninsulas.

  6. Michigan has world's only floating post office. It delivers mail to ships as they pass under the Ambassador Bridge in Detroit.

  7. Michigan has about 150 lighthouses, more than any other state in the United States.

  8. Michigan has the longest freshwater shoreline in the world.
